The Day of Judgment, prophesied for last weekend, has apparently been postponed, but moviegoers eager for rapture can find consolation — to say nothing of awe, amazement and grist for endless argument — in “The Tree of Life,” Terrence Malick’s new film, which contemplates human existence from the standpoint of eternity. Recently showered with temporal glory at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or, this movie, Mr. Malick’s fifth feature in 38 years, folds eons of cosmic and terrestrial history into less than two and a half hours. Its most provocative sequences envision the origin of the universe, the development of life on earth (including a few soulful dinosaurs) and then, more concisely and less literally, the end of time, when the dead of all the ages shall rise and walk around on a heavenly beach.
It's amazing that in two hours Hollywood will attempt to tell us about the universe, eternity, life and the end of time but will mock and ridicule Bible believing Christians for warning people of the judgement to come! No, the Tree of Life is not to be found in the movies but in the Bible. The phrase is found 10 times in Scripture, it is first found in Genesis 2 and found the last time in Revelation 22.
Genesis 2:9
King James Version (KJV)
9And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Revelation 22:2
King James Version (KJV)
2In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
The tree of life is found in the Garden of Eden and the Heavenly City, the New Jerusalem. The tree of life is a "type" or a "shadow" of the Lord Jesus Christ. If one would desire eternal life and forgiveness of sin they must turn to Christ and trust in what He did on the cross to be payment for their sins. How bizarre that a movie is named after the Redeemer and Saviour! Awe and amazement are found in Jesus not Hollywood. Make sure you have found the real Tree of Life!
